Walter Simonson...Herculean effort of Godlike proportion

Hercules Unbound No. 7. Splash page. Layouts in pencil scanned from a really old xerox. 1976.Hercules Unbound was the first comic I worked on that I didn't ink myself. I accepted the gig from Denny O'Neil, the book's editor. José Luis Garcia Lopez had been doing the pencils for the first six issues. First work of his I ever saw and it was beautiful. I took the job anyway.I took the job primarily because Wallace Wood, generally credited as Wally Wood, was doing finishes. Everybody in my generation and a lot of guys older and younger than me knows who Wally Wood is. And loved his work. An icon. An artist for EC and for the early Mad magazines. I knew Woody in those days some and the idea that he was going to ink over my stuff (or more properly 'finish' as I was doing layouts and not pencils) was a thrill. And something I'm still delighted to have on my resumé!So I sucked it up and followed José on the book. Woody used a lot of assistants over the years and basically converted whatever he was inking to look more or less like his own stuff. I was completely cool with that idea, and that's why I was content to do layouts and have Woody do finishes.David Michelinie and Cary Bates wrote the issues I did layouts for.Woody only did finishes on the first two of my six issues on the title, but it was worth it.

DC Comics - HERCULES unbound

Probably my favorite incarnation of HERC. A post apocolyptic world a twist ending great art and great stories..Wally Wood and Walt Simonson among others put out a great product. That logo has to be the greatest ever created bar none.

The Mighty HERCULES cartoon

In the 1960's Trans Lux put out a cartoon that was pretty entertaining ( For Kids ) It featured HERCULES as a young looking Super man type. He turned his ring to call on his tremendous strength to save the day. It was the same old format...Hero, Girl friend , comedy relief and a recurring villain. These days the company Trans lux was purchased by a private copyright holder. Some of these images may be a bit blurry as they're pasted from thumb nails.

Hercules is still a fan favorite.

From Slurpee cups to films to comic books HERC has been a main part of everyones life for thousands of years. Why just the other day I was at work and picked up something heavy and my co-worker came over to me and said " Ok , HERCULES why don't you let me help you with that before you get hurt. "

I prefer to think that in all his incarnations from any company he's the same guy...just at different points of his exploits and adventures.

Many incarnations...

The Mighty Hercules has been a superhero longer than any Super hero out there. He's been a mythical legendary hero for thousands of years. There have been many methods by which his tales have been told. One in particular is comic books. Since the early 1940's he has been a figure in many comic books by many different companies Quality comics , Marvel comics , DC comics and Charlton comics. The Charlton series is a stand out because it featured artwork by cartoonist and illustrator Sam Glanzman which not only ( In my opinion ) covered his origins better than most ( at the time ) his labors were spelled out in a format that was east to follow as well as an entertaining form of graphic storytelling. Classic.
